Southern Snobbery

Ok ya'll, I have been, to say the least obsessed with blogs as of late. Not like my kids are hungry and dirty obsessed, but I love to read em. Like a little voyeur peeking into someones life window. Anywhoo, being that I'm a southern lady and am raising southern women of the future, I love the preppy and southern blogs. I feel like us Southern ladies know preppy very well and that being a southern lady it's just the nature of the beast here. So do northern folks get preppy like us (I know gasp, now breath}????? Don't we have like a patent on pearls, mint julep cups, monogramming, SEC football and all that jazz? My children and I say ma'am, we Never do rude thing in public, say please and thank you, we brush our teeth then say our prayers. I mean we live and breath the southern way of life. Just tonight we had an in prompt to girls night at my house and it was complete with a Lilly theme a full spread of cheeses, dips, drinks (of adult and children in nature} on the patio over looking our pool and the lake. In just a few hours I can do this, so southern of me. Not to ramble, but I was reading a blog about a preppy mom and then read her profile and she is from a northern state a way northern state and I was like OMG, will the ladies brigade come get me??? I mean what do they know of smocking, hair bows, monogramming, madras, pearls, and our wonderful southern customs, church, daddy and momma? I had a not southern woman ask me once "by the way, whats with the hairbows on your girls that have to match every outfit they have and why are they so big?", I tell ya'll I about fell out. Anywho, what do ya'll think, btw, I have had a few and may sound crazy. Just gettin all territorial. So is it a southern thing or is it a state of mind and not the state you live in????

state of mind!! I dress my girls exactly the same - ALWAYS. I put the BIG haribows in - they take them out however!! Love this!! And yes, I can have a little dips and sips - complete with matching linens and ware!! If I buy any more dishware - my hubbie will divorce me!

I, too, wonder when I read a preppy blog, and then see "New Jersey" on their profile. Come now, there CANNOT be preps in New Jersey. Hee Hee.

And alot of "non-southerners" I meet have never had grits, or sweet tea, or a smocked dress, much less say ma'am. Have they ever had fried chicken or barbecue after church or for Sunday Supper? Probably no... But their blogs are still fun to read.

I think it is a state of mind. I am not sure if I am a northerner or a southerner any more. Born northern, raised in S. Florida (which doesn't count as southern), and now live in the true south. Still can't drink sweet tea and never really cared for grits, but the southern way of life does have its charm and allure for me.
